Day 18: Afflictions, Stranger Danger, and Praising God on Repeat

Play episode

When the righteous cry for help, the Lord hears and delivers them out of all their troubles. The Lord is near to the brokenhearted and saves the crushed in spirit. Many are the afflictions of the righteous, but the Lord delivers him out of them all. He keeps all his bones; not one of them is broken.

Psalm 34:17-20

Do you know the story of Willie Myrick? Back in 2014, he was nine years old and taken from his driveway outside of Atlanta, Georgia. As a stranger drove away with Willie trapped in his car, a song from church came to Willie’s mind as the only thing that could keep him calm. It was a song from Hezekiah Walker called “Every Praise.” Here are the lyrics:

Every praise is to our God
Every word of worship with one accord
Every praise every praise is to our God
Sing hallelujah to our God
Glory hallelujah is due our God
Every praise every praise is to our God
God my Savior
God my Healer
God my Deliverer
Yes He is, yes He is

But just thinking about the song didn’t keep Willie calm, he sang it. Over and over he sang it. And even though the stranger kept yelling at him to stop, Willie kept singing, “God my Savior, God my Healer, God my deliverer.” This went on for three hours as the man drove around mad and confused until, ultimately, he pulled his car over, told Willie not to tell anyone what had happened, and pushed him out of his car. Just like Willie didn’t listen to the man when he was singing, he didn’t listen to his final instruction either and he told his parents and the police.

“When the righteous cry for help, the Lord hears and delivers them out of all their troubles.” A big part of being righteous is living for God before trouble comes; having thanks and praises on your lips often so when trouble hits, they are the first and only things you keep repeating. Willie sang out, “God my Savior, God my Healer, God my deliverer.” You can too in your time of trouble, but start today with a heart of thankfulness for your Savior, Healer, and Deliverer.

Questions to ponder

When was a time you were the most afraid? What were you afraid of?

What is one song about God that you know that gives you hope and reminds you how big God is?

Today’s scripture reminds us, “Many are the afflictions of the righteous.” Don’t forget that living for God doesn’t mean we won’t be afflicted, but it does mean that He hears us when we cry out and he delivers us. Thank him for that today!
