But Jesus looked at them and said, “With man this is impossible, but with God all things are possible.”

Matthew 19:26

In 1865, Charles Lutwidge Dodgson wrote a book about a girl who is now a household name. Of course you won’t know her until I tell you what name he wrote her book under, Lewis Carroll. Now you know her? Alice’s Adventures are now classic works known by kids all over the globe. It’s a crazy story, with a lot of crazy things happening it, but some of those things can really give you something to think about, like this conversation between the Queen and Alice. Let’s take a look:

“I’m just one hundred and one, five months and a day.”

“I can’t believe that!” said Alice.

“Can’t you?” the Queen said in a pitying tone. “Try again: draw a long breath, and shut your eyes.”

Alice laughed. “There’s no use trying,” she said: “one can’t believe impossible things.”

“I daresay you haven’t had much practice,” said the Queen. “When I was your age, I always did it for half-an-hour a day. Why, sometimes I’ve believed as many as six impossible things before breakfast.”

The queen sounds crazy doesn’t she, believing in the impossible, but that’s just what God wants us to do, believe in the impossible being possible with Him. That doesn’t mean He wants us to decide what impossible things we feel like doing today, or even dream of doing tomorrow, but that the things that God tells us to do in His Word are impossible to do on your own. You cannot grow by thinking harder about growing. He cannot change because you work harder at being “gooder.” You grow because God works in you to will and to work for His good pleasure. If you think growing is an impossible thing, believe in God, and what’s more believe that with Him your growth is possible. Each of us have areas in our lives where we want to get better, where we want more wisdom and more self-control, and wanting is the first step, but trusting God to do that in you is the next. Through prayer, through faith, and through studying His Word you can grow a little bit every day. But like making your muscles bigger know that it takes time and repetition. Just know that you aren’t alone as you work, but He is right with you, teaching you, guiding you, and growing you.

Questions to ponder

What is one thing you once thought was impossible but now know is very possible?

What is one area in your life where you’d like to grow spiritually?

What can you do today to remind yourself of God’s hand in this growth? Make a plan to remind yourself every day that God can help you grow in this way.
