Day 17: Coupons, Back Rubs, and True Greatness

For who is the greater, one who reclines at table or one who serves? Is it not the one who reclines at table? But I am among you as the one who serves.

Luke 22:27

When I was little I once gave my mom a homemade coupon book for her birthday, many years. Have you ever done that? I put in things like one free back rub, cook a meal, breakfast in bed and doing a load of laundry. This gift was both the easiest and the hardest thing to give. Making it was easy, I just cut up some paper and wrote down a few things and bam, happy birthday mom. It was the collecting of those coupons that would mean heavy lifting. Fortunately, mom loved them when she got them, but lost them in the shuffle of cleaning up boxes and wrapping paper, and boy was I happy about that. Of course now that I’m the adult, I look back at that attempt at serving and see that in my heart I was hoping coupons were actually my ticket out of service. Coupons can be a great gift idea, but service doesn’t really happen until the coupon is redeemed. Every loving action starts with a loving desire to serve, and actually making a coupon is a good way to express your love and longing to serve, but actually getting out and doing the service is the real gift.

It can be easy to find the easiest way possible to serve, to take the lazy way out and hope that just saying you want to do something reaps the same reward as doing it, but in the life of faith the greater servant of Christ is not the one who takes it easy and reclines at the table, but it’s the one who is like our Savior that comes to serve and to give his life for others. If you see a need, don’t make a coupon as a promise to fulfill that need. Fill it! If you have the desire to serve but haven’t put feet to that desire, consi der today putting service into action and take every chance you can to love those around you through acts of service.

Questions to ponder

Have you ever made or received a coupon book for acts of service? How often, if ever, were they redeemed? Why?

What is an area of life in a friend or relative’s life where you could be of service? Serve!

What is an area of life in your church or community where you could be of service? Serve!
